Lab 2 -- Cell types

Here are the photos taken by students in class based on their hand sections from a variety of plant tissues.  Although the sections could always be thinner (don't I always say this?), many of the important characteristics of parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma cells can be seen.

The first image shows potato tissue stained with iodine.



The next image shows apple seed endosperm tissue containing oil droplets.



Next are three images from the tissues of pear fruits showing sclerids:






The next five images show the epidermis of the spinach leaf, including some nice views of guard cells with chloroplasts:










The next seven images show sections through the spinach leaf, showing photosynthetic parenchyma with chloroplasts:














These last two images show collenchyma near the epidermis of the spinach leaf petiole:
